The Mission of the Foundation
As a non-partisan, non-profit organization, The Governor’s Mansion Foundation keeps the beauty and legacy of the historic Governor’s home alive through tours and community outreach.
Our organization was born out of then-First Lady Kathy Carruthers’ desire to unite the the eclectic decorative styles that had evolved in the Governor’s Mansion over the years into a more cohesive design representing New Mexico at its best. When her husband, Garrey Carruthers took office in 1987, one of her first acts was to order a thorough evaluation of the Mansion’s structural soundness.
As major renovations were needed to improve the design and furnishings of the public areas, Mrs. Carruthers called together a bipartisan group of individuals interested in improving the Mansion. From the beginning, it was acknowledged that any redesign would have to be financed with private money. Public monies have never gone into the interior design.
To this day, the New Mexico Governor’s Mansion Foundation remains a non-partisan and non-profit organization. The responsibility for the design, furnishings, and upkeep of the public areas of the Mansion rests upon the Foundation, and its dedicated team of volunteers.
